Buying or Selling a Used Boat?

Last updated 7 years ago

You have heard the old saying “The two happiest days of a boat owner’s life are the day they buy a boat and the day they sell it.”  Why is this? What happens to the other days?

If you are buying a boat it is probably because of the endless research you must do to ensure you are getting the right boat for how you plan on using it. You are looking for a good deal, by not spending too much but also not just settling in order to get out on the water, and, at the same time, would like a good quality boat that has been properly maintained and is not just a good coat of wax.

Selling a boat is not any easier. You spend time waxing and cleaning so it shows well, taking numerous pictures to advertise it, spending a few hundred dollars to post it on all the used boat websites, and getting all of your service records in order. All of this is the easy part. It is now time to sit and wait for the phone to ring and the emails to start coming. This is simple, right?

Now the phone starts ringing and the emails are coming, but you are getting ridiculous offers. People are requesting more pictures even though you have taken about thirty pictures for an 18 foot boat, but, not to worry, they say they are coming this weekend to see it. No Show. No Phone Call. No Email. Then you have someone that is hot on the boat and you say to yourself that this is it, they are bringing cash and the boat will be gone. You take it to the water to meet them for a test drive and you wait, and wait and wait. No Show again. The classic scenario is when they do show up, love the boat, it runs great, then they ask you to take their four wheeler or 1975 classic boat that belonged to their great-grandfather but was always garage stored and runs great…

So how do you not fall into this circle? Have a reputable dealer sell it for you.
